Alebrijes :: Art & Design for the Gift Market

"Alebrijes"— Design & Illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
We're winding down our last week of MATS with one of the most fun projects — lush zipper pouches! Inspired by my old collection of alebrijes — wood carved animal figures from Oaxaca, Mexico — I spent a few days sketching scores of foxes, owls, raccoons, armadillos, gazelles and other ungulates, while studying their lively patterns. I also made some background textures and geometric patterns, and repurposed a beautiful old public-domain map of Mexico, to create a rich background. For my final piece, I yielded to my own vision of animals and my personal color sensibilities rather than utilize the artform's traditional pure, bright pigments. However, I do hope I captured some of the spirit that Pedro Linares had in mind when he first dreamt of his phantasmagoric characters which began the alebrijes folk art movement.

Happy Wall Art :: for MATS

Happy Bike Bear
"Happy"—  Digital Collage Illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Creating square wall art was our challenge for this week's MATS. I started off with a maltese in the basket and nobody on the bike seat, then a polar bear driving his salmon sidekick, and eventually this big brown fella and a happy fish along for the ride. (The idea for the wood texture came while I was admiring the grain in a beautiful serving platter that my sister gave me — I just photographed it at high-res and voila: bear fur! Inspiration is everywhere!) As winter is knocking on our door, bikes are being packed up and stored for the season… so here's one last hurrah for sunny weather. :)

Children Book Cover Design (for MATS)

Illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
This past week, I really enjoyed developing a cover design for one of Aesop's most well-known fables. This project was for week 3 of Lilla Rogers' amazing MATS course. It's wonderful to have her expert briefs each week and thoughtful reviews! It's also great to be with a group of talented artists from around the world — which pushes one to experiment and explore. I truly cannot recommended this course enough.

Sew-Zani™ :: Surface Design

Surface design and illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Week two of MATS challenged my classmates and me to create surface design for dishes inspired by Suzani textiles (Suzani is a type of embroidered and decorative tribal textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries). In honor of the traditional craftsmans' technique, I created stylized bird motifs with an embroidery trompe l'oeil effect. The palette was taken straight from the spice rack: cumin, paprika, basil, curry and… a dash of hot pink just for fun!

Veggie Pun Fun :: Surface Design for MATS

Surface design and illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
This fall I'm thrilled to be taking part in Lilla Rogers' Make-Art-That-Sells course. The class is chock-full of talented artists and it's very inspiring to be working alongside them under Lilla's expert guidance. This week's assignment was to design bolt fabric with the theme of "root vegetables & casseroles" sporting a retro vibe. (I thought they'd make fun salad plates too!) One-Liner Notes: I'm a terrible lover of puns and wordplay so I couldn't help drawing "rootin' cheerleaders", "tuba-playing tubers", "turn-up-side-down turnips", "beat 'em-up beets", and a "real-dish" wearing nothing but her "10-carrot" diamond. Ha-ha!

Tribal Feathers with Chevron :: Pattern Design

Surface design and illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Tribal-inspired design is still on trend and makes a bold statement for interiors. This beautiful southwest design could easily update a living room or be the focal point in a master bedroom. The feather art was hand-drawn with alternate color ways available upon request. As with most of my work, the motif and color palette are infinitely editable — so you can offer a custom look to your client.

Van Gogh's Flower :: Fabric Design

Surface design and illustration © Kim Buchheit; photography © Jeff McGarvin; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
In anticipation of an upcoming partnership opportunity (details coming soon!) I'm in the process of developing a series of photo-based surface designs. Toward this end, I'm excited to have the privilege to work with some of photographer Jeff McGarvin's beautiful imagery… like this swoon-worthy sunflower! His work is silvery rich with warm tones and deep blacks that are reminiscent of palladium prints from days gone by. Stay tuned as I'll be posting more from this collection in the coming weeks.

Moo Biz Cards :: Sea Creatures Illustrations

Surface design and illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
I just unpacked my new mini business cards from Moo… using the sea creature illustrations from one of my latest designs. Awww… they are just so cute… who doesn't love things in miniature. So fun! Looking forward to passing them out soon.

Sea Creatures in Space :: Surface Design

Surface design and illustration © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Fish blast-off in rockets, crabs and seahorses ride spaceships, and sweet whales spout stars while octopuses catch 'em. Original whimsical illustrations to delight and engage small children. This toss repeat pattern would make adorable wallpaper in a child's bedroom — or, sew up as fun jammies for little aspiring astronauts.

These freshly illustrated tea towels are easy to make and fun gifts to give this summer! For the best value, order 4-up of one Yard (54"x36") and you'll have enough for all your summer BBQ hostesses and besties. Oh, and btw, the gluten-free recipes are delicious too. Purchase Pancrepe fabric here; purchase Faux Pasta fabric here. Happy summer, everyone :)

Summer's Offerings :: Fabric Design

Surface pattern design © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Winter decided to pay us a visit this afternoon! Snow is falling and winds are blustering, but I had summer on my mind all day in the studio. Produced from natural found objects using a technique called scanography, my latest design collection entitled, Summer's Offerings, is ideal for swimwear (and pretty pillows, too!). Nature's palette is so incredible that all I nearly had to do was set the elements to repeat. And, great news, we are now offering customers the option of Poly Lycra Spandex — which is perfect for summer swimwear! Contact me if you're interested in ordering fabric or purchasing my designs for other uses (e.g. wallpaper, exhibition, paper goods).

Birds on the Wires

A friend shared with me this morning Jarbas Agnelli's beautiful music and video entitled, "Birds on the Wires" — and I thought I'd pass it along. There is something sublime and mysterious about this rather common site... and Jarbas has captured that and more in his lovely work. I was similarly inspired by the bird-on-a-wire phenomena awhile back when visiting an industrial area in Phoenix — looking up from the rather dim cityscape, a rhythmic dappling of pigeons on a wire caught my eye. I created a collection of repeat patterns in response to this experience and I've reposted it below so it could sit side-by-side with Agnelli's little masterpiece.

Blue Whales :: Surface Pattern Design

Surface pattern design © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
I just received my Blue Whale pattern printed on Silky Faille (see pic) and simply love its stretchiness! In gratitude to the fabric gods, I'm making this design available for purchase (on your fabric of choice — or as wallpaper) through my Spoonflower shop for a limited time only. Designers, this would make for great bedding in a child's room — or, as wallpaper on an accent wall. (Photo shows sample swatch and my original hand-carved linocut stamp. Colors are all editable upon request with minimum yardage order. Story includes coordinating designs.)
