Minnows :: Surface Pattern Design

Sometimes the simplest drawing is the best. I was reminded of this yet again while working on the above minnow pattern. At first I sketched out all the details on this tiny fish — the fins, gills, lateral line, scales, etc. — but in the end I took a stylized, reductionist approach for the linocut. The minnow motif can be printed up to 6 inches wide at 300 ppi (which could make for dramatic upholstery fabric and/or pillows); but it can also be scaled down to a tiny print (think kids' clothing!). Colorways are limitless; pattern is multidirectional (works "upside down" too); line color can be changed; and each fish in the tile could be a different color. A grunge background (like the lower sample) adds another layer of interest and great texture. I've found that interior designers (and many clients) are immensely creative, so flexible designs like this allow everyone to get involved in developing the final look-and-feel!

Cock-a-doodle-doo! The sun is coming up earlier these days, giving us more time to do the things we love. Morning walks in the woods, sipping coffee with our besties, doodling in sketchpads. :) This design is a celebration of our favorite feathered alarm clock. Shown here in two grunge-textured colorways that might get you thinking about a fun twist on holiday wrap... no, it's never too early!

Polka Op :: Surface Pattern Design

Polka dots morph into 3-d spheres for extra pop in these op-art-inspired designs. (The topmost one is for the Wonder-bread generation. Ha ha!) One could spend a lifetime developing these abstract optical illusions, playing with endless colorways, and imagining a variety of creative applications for these energizing surface designs. Fun fun!

Twist on Op Art :: Surface Pattern Design

While conducting a children's workshop on Op Art last week, I thought of combining some plaids with traditional Vasarely-esque designs. These eye-popping patterns would play nicely with basic plaids and soothing solids to embolden a bedroom (think linens) or open up a neglected nook (think wallpaper). The topmost sample depicts a story of coordinating designs mixing plaids and checkerboard illusions; the bottom sample shows three colorways for the same half-drop repeat.

Pug Mugs :: Surface Pattern Design

Surface pattern design © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Bitten by the dog bug and smitten by so many wonderful four-leggeds of late, cuddly canines have been a source of inspiration in the studio this year —much to the chagrin of my faithful feline companion (sorry Sprouty Bear). Thought this textured parade of pugs would make delightful all-occasion wrapping paper for dog lovers of all stripes. Do you have a favorite breed? Leave a comment and it could turn up in my next suface pattern design.
