Surface pattern design © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Visualizing caterpillars boldly waltzing up a wall or playing up a pillow? Would you like to see your vision mocked up, experiment with colorways, or consider a mix of different patterns? I'm happy to do all that for you — just let me know your dream and we can work together to make it a reality. Choose designs from my existing collection of surface designs — or — I can create custom art and patterns just for you!

Monarch Caterpillar :: Surface Pattern Design

Surface pattern design © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Late last August into September we witnessed the monarch butterfly migration through Arizona as they stopped to visit the Grand Canyon. A conservation-minded research group tagged some of the butterflies and pointed out some 5th instar larvae (the last and largest stage)! These chunky caterpillars are so lovely and their markings appeal to my designer sensibilities. The above linocut-based pattern looks great printed large (tile ~11" in height) — and would make for dramatic wallpaper. (Note: Spoonflower now prints custom wallpaper; contact me in you're interested :)).

Want to help? You can get involved in the butterfly research project (and learn to tag butterflies) by contacting the Southwest Monarch Study organization.

Autumn Leaves :: Surface Pattern Design

Surface pattern design © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Chilly little secrets are wafting through the studio today, whispering of winter's imminent arrival. One last nod to the changing of the seasons with this double-layered print. It was hard to choose which colorways to post as this print looks great in a muted or saturated palette. Note that the linework can print positive or in reverse (white). Mock up shows print in cozy bedding and coordinating wallpaper.

Teacups :: Surface Design

Surface designs © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
This design takes a traditional kitchen motif and turns it upside down with fresh color combinations, my signature linocut illustration, and coordinating prints in an eye-popping plaid and an op-art-inspired graphic. Two colorways shown, but as with all my designs the palette is endlessly editable.

Grown-up Spirograph :: Repeat Pattern

Surface designs © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
One of my favorite toys as a kid was Spirograph. I was amazed at the beautiful, complex, flower-like designs that were spun like magic beneath my circling hand. So when I saw this cute little hypotrochoid set at the Getty Museum last month, I had to get it. After hours of spinning up gobs of designs from the plastic gears, I translated them via Illustrator into these nostalgic repeat patterns. Such fun :)

Birds-on-a-Wire Stripes :: Repeat Pattern

Surface designs © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Enjoyed celebrating my husband's recent birthday by spending time in the valley with friends and family. The skies were overcast and the city was beautifully photogenic! We shot several photos of the cityscape — and this surface design story is a product of that shoot. Colorways are limitless; it was tough deciding on which ones to post.

Eco-Note: Concerned about the welfare of our sweet feathered friends? Look for bird sanctuaries in your neck of the woods and learn how you can help.

Elephant Love :: Repeat Pattern

Surface designs © Kim Buchheit; licensing and/or purchasing options available.
Elephants! These intelligent animals are passionate and playful — displaying true grace despite their bulky tonnage. This surface design honors the beloved elephant with an earthy clay palette and conversational, two-directional pattern. (As with most of my designs, the colorways and scale are editable.)

Eco-Note: Unfortunately, some of these amazing creatures live an unnatural and difficult life held captive in zoos, circuses, and the like. If you're interested in helping elephants in need, please support The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. This impressive organization is the nation's largest natural habitat refuge devoted to endangered African and Asian elephants. Oh, and did I mention they have Elecams (!) on their website too? :D
